Finlands approach to public health, as reflected in the National Public Health Programme, emphasizes the cross-sectoral nature of health policy. The reduction of health inequalities has been set as a goal in the Government Programme of Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen (2007). The National Public Health Committee is the advisory board for public health in Finland. This body was established at the end of the 1990s for the preparation of the National Public Health Programme. The Committee continues its work under the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health (MSAH) and it is assigned for three years at a time.
Other bodies include the Permanent Secretaries and EU Coordination Committees (which include health and social issues). This committee's task is to develop intersectoral health policy. At the moment, the Committee and its sections have been involved in the preparation of National Action Plan to reduce health inequalities.
