Policy Maker Consultations
One of DETERMINE's main objectives is to build the capacities of the health sector to collaborate with other policy sectors in order to stimulate further aciton on the social determinants of health (SDH), to reduce health inequalities.
As a first step in this process, 19 public health institutes and other health agencies throughout Europe have consulted with 40 policy makers and politicians from different policy areas in order to get a better sense of their understanding of concepts such as health equity and the SDH and of whether and how they have engaged with health. These consultations were analysed and the main findings reported in
DETERMINE Working Document 3: VOICES FROM OTHER FIELDS.
Capacity Building Activities
All DETERMINE main partners have undertaken one or more actions to build their capacity on the social determinants of health (June-Dec 2009). These actions were inspired by a
MENU for CAPACITY BUILDING & AWARENESS RAISING ACTIONS that was developed as part of DETERMINE. Partners were asked to undertake at least one action that represents a step forward to take forward work in their organisations, regions and/or countries on addressing the social determinants of healht and to improve health equity. Actions have mainly being undertaken in the areas of advocacy and awareness raising, partnership development and skill development.
Capacity Building Meeting
DETERMINE partners met on September 25, 2009 in Paris to exchange on the Capacity Building actions that they are undertaking in the context of DETERMINE.
Presentations were provided on the theory of capacity building, awareness raising and advocacy, public-private-partnerships and on specific tools and mechanisms to foster partnership development at the local level. Partners also discussed their specific actions in the context of workshops.
