Health In All Policies

DETERMINE seeks to identify approaches that can be used to influence policy in favour of health and achieve a health in all policies perspective, particularly for the purpose of addressing inequalities in health.

During the first year of the project (2007-2008), 15  DETERMINE partners identified policies and actions that have taken place within countries, and at the EU level, to address Social Determinants of Health Inequalities. These policies and actions were identified via a questionnaire, which also identified structures and tools/mechanisms being used in the country to support a ‘health in all policy’’ approach.

Successful implementation of such approaches depends on a number of factors, including the ability to convince policy makers of the benefits of taking the effects on health determinants and health equity into account.

See DETERMINE working document # 1: 'POLICIES AND ACTIONS ADDRESSING THE SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH INEQUALITIES: EXAMPLES OF ACTIVITY AT EU MEMBER STATE LEVEL IN EUROPE'.

The outcomes of the findings of the 15 DETERMINE partners taking part in this work-package (see report) have also been incorporated in their respective National Level Policy section of this Portal.

See questionnaire to identify policies and actions to reduce health inequalities by acting on the social determinants of health.

Economic arguments to support action can be powerful persuaders. Thus in the second year of the project (2009-2010) DETERMINE partners  have tried to identify instances where economic analyses have taken place, and explore the economic arguments which have been used to incorporate a Social Determinants of Health Inequalities perspective. An overall analysis of the identified policies, actions and economic approaches has been undertaken with a view to achieving more widespread adoption of effective and proven approaches.
