Introduction |
| Crossing Bridges is a European Union (EU) funded project promoting the implementation of a Health in All Policies (HiAP) approach in EU Member States in order to improve health equity within and between states. The project aims to advance the implementation of HiAP approaches in EU Member States by: - The development of practical tools to turn HiAP theory into practice;
- Investigating specific examples of inter-sectoral collaboration to identify effective methodologies that can be further developed;
- Developing the capacities of national and regional public health institutes in order to promote HiAP.

Summary |
| Whilst it is broadly acknowledged that policies and actions taken by the non-health sector influence public health and well-being and can contribute towards the reduction of health inequalities, effective implementation within these sectors remains difficult. Health considerations need to be integrated into policies beyond the health sector which requires a clear mandate from central government supported by effective and responsive leadership with a view to implementing systematic policy changes which build capacities and adopt innovative evidence led methodologies to “cross bridges”. Through this process real progress can be achieved in the EU’s efforts to reduce health inequalities and in the promotion of the health of all EU citizens. The Crossing Bridges project will look to explore the factors that ensure a successful HiAP approach through the analysis of case studies from across Europe. The project aims to raise awareness of the advantages of adopting a more holistic approach to health, assisting health promotion advocacy and contributing to population health information. These outcomes will provide real EU added-value to national health system approaches and encourage economies of scale as well as improving the transfer of knowledge. Greater application of cross-sectoral approaches is expected to lead to long term health gains for communities and health systems alike. The Crossing Bridges project will build upon the work of the ‘Closing the Gap’ (2004-2007) and ‘DETERMINE’ (2007-2010) projects, and will complement Equity Action (the Joint Action on Health Inequalities) (2011-2014), to advance the implementation of HiAP approaches in EU member states. |
