Country profile

The Republic of Croatia is a unitary democratic parliamentary republic located in central and southeast Europe and has a population of over four million people. The economy relies heavily upon the service and industrial sector as well as agriculture.

Since declaring independence in 1991 Croatia has achieved a very high human development and income equality, and ranks high among central European nations in terms of education, health, quality of life and economic dynamism. Croatia provides a universal health care system and free primary and secondary education.

Croatia is an acceding state of the European Union, with full membership expected in July 2013.

Health inequalities have not been afforded a high amount of priority on the political agenda as the recognition of the issues involved and solutions required differs among politicians. Policy responses that have been implemented tend to be devised at the national level

• Croatian National Institute of Public Health (CNIPH). The Centre covers all the aspects of communicable and non-communicable diseases, social medicine, school medicine, drug addiction prevention, environmental health and microbiology as well as risk assessments in all these areas.
