DETERMINE - an EU Consortium for Action on Socio-economic Determinants of Health

Determine project logo

The initiative, DETERMINE (2007-2010) establishes an EU Consortium for Action on the Socio-economic Determinants of Health (SDH), which aims to take forward the work of the WHO Commission on the SDH (CSDH) in an EU context.
It brings together over 50 health bodies, public health and health promotion institutes, governments and various other organizations from 26 European countries. (DETERMINE in brief: flyer)

DETERMINE developed out of an earlier EU co-funded project ‘Closing the Gap -Strategies for Action to Tackle Health Inequalities” (2004-2007). A clear conclusion from this project was that real change with respect to health inequalities cannot be achieved without addressing the social determinants leading to health inequalities, to tackle the health gradient. At the same time, it is also important to improve the health of very vulnerable groups, at a faster rate than that of the rest of the population (Dr. Hillary Graham). DETERMINE therefore also explores the issue of innovative approaches, private-public partnerships and social marketing.
